Getting new car insurance after no fault claim.

So I had an accident whereby a barrier fell on my car & it was written off. Ultimately the company maintaining the barrier will be at fault but this may take a long time to sort out I'm told.

In the meantime, I need to buy a new car & get new insurance.

I don't want to go with Diamond who have been terrible through this process.

For the new insurers, do I have to say it's a claim against my insurance (because it is I guess until blame is settled)? Even though it's not a traditional type of accident? Do I now have no no claims bonus (it wasn't protected)?

If this is how it works and I get charged more - will I ever get it back when it's proven to be their fault?

Please help, this process of claiming is awful!

Hi Snomad, the key question is whether your insurance company will be able to recover any claim you've made for the write off. If not or at least for as long as it takes for them to get the recovery this claim affects your no claims bonus and your insurance record. People get very hung up on blame with insurance but policies carry no claims bonuses not no blame bonuses if you follow what I'm saying. Assuming they do recover any losses at some point then your non claims bonus would be reinstated. Sorry that this may take a while and give you some financial pain in the meantime.

I was in the same situation when I renewed last year.

When you get your quotes you declare an unsettled claim. When the claim has been settled you phone your insurance company, tell them the outcome of the claim and they will adjust your premium accordingly. I would phone them first to get confirmation though.

Your NCB will be reduced by 2 years whilst the claim is open

In relation to a claim all insurers only recognise 5 years as the maximum... so if you have the maximum you will be on 3 years NCD for the moment. As said above, RING any new insurer to explain the situation and once the claim is sorted and your NCD has been allowed (if Diamond can recover all their costs) they will update it their end and give any return premium due.
