I guess you could return it under SOGA as it's not fit for use with half of it missing
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

After such a time lapse, the OP would need to prove that they did not pick up the second box.

OP, does the receipt indicate how many boxes there should be, or how many were scanned?
    Gone ... or have I?

The boxes are clearly labelled "1 of 2" and "2 of 2", and they even have warning signs above the items stating how many boxes it comes in!

I'm afraid this is your mistake, so rather than blame Ikea, it's time to start grovelling to their better nature, which will be somewhat difficult without a receipt.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

The boxes are not clearly labelled it has a little yellow sticker on the SIDE of the box with a number on it, the numbers should be on the front of the box! I also had two trolleys full of boxes that day and a one year old child and yes i know it was a silly mistake but you would think they would give you the other box to compete your item rather than having to pay another £86 for something you already have half of.

    That's your opinion is it?

    Wow!! Quite a handful.
By yourself I guess as you don't mention anyone else being there to help you push two trolleys and supervise the baby.

Yes it was a silly mistake.
It was also silly to lose the receipt for two trolley loads of goods. By doing that you have put at risk any longer term claim for failure of the things.

I really cannot understand why you are trying to shift the blame onto Ikea.

I think you need to take some responsibility for your actions.

If I were you, I would be searching high and low for that receipt.

    Are the boxes charged separately?
    Did you pay by card?
Maybe you could list all the things you bought at Ikea that day.
Price them and total it up.
Match that total against the line on your bank or credit card statement, and thus demonstrate that only one of the boxes were paid for.

I am not blaming ikea at the end of the day I just want what I've paid for. I paid cash and the boxes are not charged separately, and I'm busy moving house that's how I've ended up losing the reciept.

Its going to be very difficult for you to prove that you didnt pick up both boxes though. the checkout person is not going to know about every product they sell either..

Id beg to ikea's better nature and if that fails then you may have to bite the bullet and pay for a new one.

It would be nice if they help you out after this mistake, after all, you are hardly going to be trying to con them out of an extra 1/2 a piece of furniture you couldn't use without the first half, are you.

But having been through months of CARP with IKEA over a perfectly clear cut complaint myself, if they don't help out, I'd just give up. It's not worth all the grey hairs and near nervous breakdown you'll get trying to get any sense out of anybody there.

I'll never shop there again. Not if they were the last shop on the planet. Seriously, save yourself a lot of pain and give up.

The whole point of ikea is that it's pretty cheap BECAUSE there are hardly any staff. You pay little and think for yourself. Besides, there's so much staff there, that I doubt a member of staff would notice, just by glancing that you only have one of the two boxes from shelving unit 86.

As others have said, there ARE signs saying how many boxes an item requires. Write them a nice letter and send a photo of a half finished unit and they may be nice, but you can't really return it as unfit for purpose when that half of a unit would probably work well if it had the second half.

You could ask them to check and see if they've got an extra Box 2 which they should have
