Don't be surprised if Santander deny all knowledge. There are a few threads here concerning people finding old Abbey passbooks which have become dormant and Santander stating that they have no record of the account and are only obliged to keep paperwork for 6 years! I hope you have more luck with Bradford & Bingley which is a more recent acquisition.
The problem is that an old passbook is evidence but not proof that you are owed money. (A passbook could be reported lost, a new one issued, the account closed and passbook updated - and then the original turn up some years later.)

Labour did the right thing selling off B+B,sadly they sold it to an even worse organised bank !
If the OP,s account had more than £100 in it on demutualisation day he may be due the proceeds of shares as well
