Maglite 3D Torch Half Price

You know what, I totally forgot about the Luxeon 3watt and as a result, didn't look if the Nite Ize product was one
Would explain the price of the bulb. Anyway, will see how it is. Ultraleds.co.uk have a 3watt luxeon drop in unit for a Maglite 3D but for that you/I'd be paying full whack at £29.38 :eek:0 -

Flippin' 'eck My 6D just cost me £20 and it's ace, I just gonna stick with normal bulbs I think. TBH, I don't think led's can yet compete with the range of a 'normal' bulb.0 -
I received the LED upgrade bulb this morning, from the prompt seller! After reading gifteddante's post that Nite Ize weren't using a Luxeon based LED, I wasn't expecting much from this product upon delivery, so I wasn't too disappointed in its performance.
Brightness: Compared to the incandescent bulb, brightness is subpar. This is mainly due to the whiter colour of light given off by the LED and the low power of this particular LED.
Beam width: The standard bulb has a filament that stands higher up within the torch's reflector and surrounded by glass. As a result, a larger amount of light is reflected out achieving a wider beam and spotlight. The LED is mounted directly onto the surface of the replacement bulb unit and only has around 180 degrees of exposed bulb/lens. Most of this light shines directly outward causing a characteristic LED beam that is narrow and concentrated. Adjusting the beam from narrow to wide results in a loss of brightness very quickly as the little light there is shining into the reflector is spread out widely.
Value for money: If you don't require blinding brightness (you may be blinded if you look directly into the beam of the LED - DONT DO THIS!) and would like to increase battery life, the LED may be ideal. Using old half-knackered batteries I tested the brightness dropoff. The LED maintained the same brightness over 2 minutes, whereas the incandecent bulb was losing brightness slowly for the first 10-15 seconds until it seemed to stabilise. I personally, won't be using this particular LED as a main bulb, maybe as a spare as it is quite robust with no glass to shatter.
