No they cant as suppliers use a system called rainbow, if the mpr is not in their ownership it wont allow the job to be booked.
I think Rainbox relates to booking jobs with the old NGm Transco meter workers, not all suppiers use them now so that restriction does not apply.

    Hi rablovesroo,

I just wanted to let you know the general house move procedure for E.ON so you know what to do.

When you have taken responsibility of the property you will need to inform the current supplier (E.ON) that you have moved in and give your details and meter readings to enable us to set up an account for you.

As it's pre-payment we will also arrange to send out new keys/cards to enable you to top up the meter.

Once your account is set up, you will be able to contact your preferred supplier to arrange to take the supply, this will normally take around 6 weeks to complete.

E.ON do have guidelines on removing pre-payment meters and also charge £51.06 for a non essential meter exchange.

If you do decide to change supplier they will give you their info on removing meters.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Helena :)

  • Now I'm confused, because an EDF rep sent me a message earlier saying that once we move in and the supply is with them, they can remove the prepayment meters free of charge!

Who's then correct in this case?

Please help a simpleton who's only ever dealt with one move from parental home to rental property...until now! :o

    Hi rablovesroo,

I hope it's not me that has confused you :o

Once the supply is with your preferred supplier you can arrange meter changes with them.

But as the house is currently supplied by E.ON you will need to inform them when you move in so they can set up an account for you, as they will be billing you until the change of supply is complete.

So, from what you have said you want to do, the steps to take are as follows.

    Move in to new house
Inform E.ON (current supplier) you have moved in give meter readings and details
Ask preferred supplier to take over supply(takes about 6 weeks)
Once the change of supply is complete arrange meter change

  • Different suppliers have different policies and charges for changing meters. My advice is if your existing supplier won't switch them over for free, find a supplier that will. If EDF say they will, let them do it.

Some suppliers are missing a trick on retaining customers here methinks.
  • and have a read of my thread....please make sure you have no or limited credit on your meters when you switch!!

mind you easier said than done, since you don't know how long the whole process will take

Why do suppliers keep propergating this myth. If I am due to move into a house and advise my current supplier he can take over supplying the property from the day I move in. As it is a Change of Supplier/Change of Tenant there is no objection period and the new supplier can set a Supply Start Date of one day after they send the registration flow (Read the MRA).

I too am surprised as Helena normally offers sound advice. I was caught by NPower when I moved into my home, the previous owner got them out to do a final meter read, I moved in the next day, of course the meter reader had arranged a sales visit and this chap turned up.

He told me the house was with NPower and I must switch to them, I was welcome to take my current supplier but I had to wait an initial switching period before I could do this. On that day I had the removal van, visits from BT and Sky, so you can understand on this occasion I believed what I was told.

Later on reality dawned and I phoned NPower's customer service line to make sure there would be no problems during my switch and someone gave me the correct information and said I had been mis-sold.

No wonder consumers have no respect for the suppliers these days.
  • Hello,

EDF have now confirmed that I would have to set up an account with E:ON first, so if it must be, so be it.

Helena, if you're around, could you possibly please answer one last question?

Is there any way (if the account is set to start with E:ON on moving day) that I can arrange to have the prepayment meter removed immediately ie. that very day? I really REALLY don't fancy have to deal with a PPM at all if poss.

    Ta! :)

    Hi spiro,

I understand what you are saying and I have had a word with one of the guys here, who is more experienced with these issues than me :o

He says that starting the change of supply process before you have taken responsibility of a property may cause issues, ie; if the house move doesn't go ahead etc; then the tenant may be stuck with a supplier they didn't want and have to change back.

Also the company taking the supply may not do this whilst the customer is not responsible for the house.

    Hi rablovesroo,

E.ON follow some rules on removing pre-payment meters, I will just outline them for you.

To remove a PP meter, the customer will need to have lived at the address for 12 months if renting (doesn't apply if you own the house)
A charge will apply of £51.06 to cover the cost of the appointment.
E.ON may perform and external credit check.
You would need to pay future bills by monthly Direct Debit.

The rules do vary slightly depending on individual circumstances.

Hope this answers your questions, Sorry I can't be of more help.
