Credit Card to pay for holiday

Hello

I could do with some advice / recommendations please.

I'm looking at getting a credit card to use for paying for a holiday for me and my boyfriend this summer as we can't afford to book everything in one go. Problem is I've never had a credit card so I haven't a clue what I am looking for.

Can anybody recommend anything for me? We're planning a mini trip round Italy so for hotels, flights, tours etc we'd probably be putting around £1000 on it. Can we do that?

Say if we used it for £1000 we would probably pay it off at £200 a month so we would have it paid for in 5 months. I've looked at Martin's pages on Credit Cards but there's so much information and never having had one before I don't know where to start other than knowing I don't want to pay any interest so we could get an interest free one for 12 months. I've also seen that some offer freebies such as free flights but these can be quite limited. We will be travelling in August so I'm guessing the offer either wouldn't apply then or the choice would be very limited.

One thing I should probably ask is if there is a card that is recommended for cash withdrawals abroad? As we will be travelling around some different places I think I would feel more comfortable withdrawing money as and when we need it rather than carrying a big wad of Euro’s around with us. Oh also can you use a credit card when paying for meals etc in restaurants or would this be better done on debit card or just cash?

If you've not had a credit card before, then best to start with your own bank. May not come with 0% interest or rewards, but it would be a start.

Card that offer free flights don't just hand them out when you take out a card. You earn points/miles towards them with every transaction .

Remember that paying for a holiday with a credit card tends to attract additional charges, so you'll have that as well as interest to pay.

And yes, you can use credit cards in most restaurants. All but the smallest, cheapest, off the beaten track types.

Your own bank will be your best bet for a decent card as they know your finances.
If they say no then you have had it as the only likely card you would get is a high interest credit card with a limit of around £300 as you have no credit history.
Unfortunately it can take many years of managing credit cards to get a good credit rating these people are the ones who gets the 0% deals.

You need your bank to give you a card if not I am afraid you and your boyfriend will end up in blackpool.

Yep, if you've not had a credit card before or if you have any "bad credit" then expect your mini break to be more Grimsby than Rome :rotfl:
