Advice on new computer

Virgin cable, which I assume you're on, seems to be one of the few providers where you actually get something like the rated speed. If you're only talking about a single computer using the connection, then 10Mb/s should be more than adequate for everything except very large downloads. Their upload speed is pretty good too. My Virgin 10Mb line gives close to 10Mb/s download and 1Mb/s upload - just checked it on speedtest and it says 9.77Mb/s download and 1.01Mb/s upload.
I'm sure the faster speeds give close to their rated performance too, but do you really need it?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. really i dont want to be too rude
but Acer and Packard Bell in response to a thread for a reliable PC - just wondering when that happened, i have only been on holiday for a week and come back and find the world has been turned upside down
Better an acer or a packard bell than an advent or an msi.
and rudeness seems to come as second nature to a lot of people on this forum so don't worry about it.0 -
At the moment the most critical general speed decision is to get 4GB RAM, and plenty of hard drive space (possibly split over two hard drives, with software on one and data on the other, which I like to do). You can save on fast processor and fancy graphics - not necessary for office/internet.0

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - It did confirm my thoughts already - about all my issues - one last question: in order to get the best out of my isp - currently Virgin 10mb - anyone got experience of 30mb or 50mb package - is it noticeable faster/worth the money? Prob on wrong board now....
What do use the internet for?
Do you upload tons of photos/videos/content, or use torrents? If not, then the upload speed isn't massively important.
If you download lots of big files then the extra speed will be handy, but 10mb is pretty nippy as it is. If you really need to download that 1gb 10 mins quicker then it might be worth it.
If all you do is browse the internet and look on fb/twitter, then 10mb is more than enough imo.
I went from 2mb to 17mb and didn't really notice a difference when browsing. Maybe an extra second or two on content heavy pages, but the only time it really makes a difference is downloading large files.0 -

Reason why I'm worried about speed is that I'll be 'surfing' web pages and using social media an awful lot as in the process of setting up a social media business which means that waiting for pages to download will be a real drain on my time so need to ensure I set myself up properly from the start. Don't anticipate uploading/downloading large files but it could be I need to upload clients videos onto youtube/facebook - so maybe...but don't anticipate great volumes even if I do.0
