When I learned to drive, I learned on the test routes and surrounding area. I always thought that was the done thing.

Same here, but in those days there were 'routes'. They have now changed to test so the examiner says something like 'follow the signs for Dover', this is designed to see how you cope driving 'on your own' like you will have to after the test.
