Hope this makes sense...looking at getting a van that achives a mpg figure that has me spending less than £120(or £100 would be better!) If i do at most 1000 miles in a month! Assuming desiel is at todays prices of about £1.36.9 in my area...
Work in progress...Update coming July 2012.

    Anything above 51mpg for £120.

However, this totally depends on your driving and where / how far you are driving.
  • Citroen C2 1.4 or 1.6 HDi My GFs giving me grief as she wants one..... I've done the sums for myself and I could do my 1200miles for work on £110ish per month.... she does slightly more mileage than me as shes a girl and she shops and stuff and thinks fuels free as they do.... She has the C2 Suzuki Swift Diesel and Yaris Diesel on her shortlist..she changes her mind day to day:T.. I've not looked at the Swift or Yaris yet.

On average, a van (an actual van, not a car-van) does around 30MPG.

Oh, to answer your question. £120 buys around 90 litres of fuel... There are 20 gallons in 90 litres of fuel, so... 20 gallons x 4.55 litres x £1.36 = £123.76. No offense but you must be off your mind if you think a van can manage 55mpg. (especially if its on the motorway, due to the shear shape and aerodynamics of a van, you'd be lucky to average 35mpg.)

So depending on the engine/weight I'd say 25-30MPG in the city, and around 35MPG on the motorway doing 55-60mph. I say this out of experiance as my old man owns a Volkswagon Transporter T4 (100BHP) and those are his figures and he drives really neat and tidy and not like the typical van driver who has his fuel filled up by the company he works for.

Again, if your looking for a diesel that can manage 55mpg, you need to look into car-vans.

    Hope this helps.

55mpg average in a van? I presume you drive on empty motorways at nighttime? Thats better than the
    manufacturers claim to average.

Dont forget the weight you carry will also affect fuel consumption. Older van will be less fuel efficient than newer
common rail diesel engines, But cheaper to fix. A van averaging 35mpg will cost you over £170.

What is a nivarro? Nissan Navara? I doubt that will average more than 40mpg. Probably mid 30's

    Size/load capacity required?

Easily acheived in a car derived van... i.e Astra/207 or Berlingo etc..

Berlingo I've been using is in daytime on normal dual carriageways... And thats 55mpg without fail with a mixed week of being laden but I admit mostly unladen... I've fuelled it neck to neck and worked it out what its doing... the newer HDI engined Berlingos etc should do even more.
