You could try charging the banks when they make a mistake

  • Hello all :)

Just wondering if anyone can give me any tips on how to do this?

At shop today, card declined twice. Plenty of money in the account so I asked them to try again. Failed again :(

I'd used the card in the morning at the same shop so couldn't understand why it wouldn't go through this time, so said I would draw it out of the cash machine out the front of the shop. I was then followed by the security guard to cash machine outside the shop and drew out the money.

Basically marched back in again to the incredibally long queue, all tutting etc. to pay and followed out the shop again. This has happened on a few occassions ( not as embarrassing as this time though and not in this shop!) and I've had a belly full :(

What would be fair compensation for the stress involved and perhapse breech of their contract? Will also charge for the letter me thinks!

I'm sooo embarrassed. I use this shop allmost daily but I don't think I'll be showing my face OR blooming card in there again for a while

Probably not the bank's fault, probably a problem with the Visa/Mastercard/whatever network, outwith the bank's control.
  • you already said that you made a transaction there in the morning - may be loads of transactions. why not take the cash and pay
  • Hello again :)

Thanks for the replys. I thought if the prob was with the network it said so on the till screen? Lady on the till just said it was declined..no reason e.g expired card etc.

I did pay with cash in the end, don't like to carry much about as I find I spend less on the card. I make frequent trips there as I seem to have a brain like a sieve...

I just wondered if I had any right to complain to the bank? The last time it happened we were buying some food and it was declined..drew the money out and paid, but once home I phoned them and they said they'd stopped the transaction due to it being used for large transactions during the day.

We'd bought a kitchen and a conservatory so I could understand that! They did appologise and I could see they had our interests in mind.

This time however I had used the card once in the morning in the supermarket, then after picking up kids and being reminded of pancake day (sieve brain again!) checked my balance on the machine outside, then went in to get my bits and bobs. I didn't draw the cash out when checking as I do prefer paying by card..e.g. this small shop cost me £6. If I'd drawn it out the £10 would dissapear very quickly, or always seems to for me!

Therefore the reason I was given last time doesn't apply.

I no longer use that bank and thanks to online banking things go rather smoother these days, especially with my current v.efficient bank.

  • I know it's probably to late to complain now, but just want to share something. Last summer i went to supermarket to do some shoping and my card was declined. Good that i had some extra cash on me. I knew that i had plenty in my account, so after i left shop, i phoned my bank straight away. And they said card was blocked because they got some post returned back. When i asked why they didn't call me first, she just could'nt give me a straight answer. Anyway, after all the security questions card was unblocked. But this doesn't end here. I went out with my friends in the evening. And to my surprise, i could'nt get any money from the cashpoint. Again had to call customer services. And now excuse was 'oh she forgot to activate your card again, i will do that for you, but it will take another 20min before you can use your card'. Well the fact that i had few drinks 'helped' me to forget this incident. But now when i think, i should'nt let them to get away with this. Especially when i got £25 charge recently.

Plus when i was back in my home country, i could'nt use internet banking. Apparently they stop you from using internet banking, because you outside country. But they dont say anything about it on they T&C.

    Oh, my bank is Alliance&Leicester
