frustrated with CC application please help!

And very sorry if these questions have been asked a million times before, but I feel very frustrated and confused 
My 0% HSBC card is about to run out and I've just tried to apply for another balance transfer (MBNA) and been rejected.
The reason being, they say, there is no record of me ever having had any credit in the past (which I have had, and with a good track-record).
I came upon this problem when I first applied for a balance transfer and got copies of all my files from Experian/Equifax/Credit-something(?). As it turned out I'm "Alex" on the electoral roll, but on all other official things (and CC's, bank statements) I'm down as my full name, which caused some of the credit agencies to think I was not on the electoral roll.
Also I used to have a LLoydstsb CC (paid off and cancelled a while ago) and also a loan with Lloyds (in my sig below) which don't appear on the files.
When I called up the credit agency in question (can't remember, either Equifax or Experian) - they just said - Lloydstsb don't choose to share this information with us, nothing we can do.
I thought about putting a note on my files detailing my credit history, but someone here suggested this would just complicate things further.
Anyway, back to MBNA the other day. I had done an on-line application and then called. After the guy said "computer-says-no", I asked him to check me out under "Alex" and hey-presto some of my credit history appeared.
He suggested I re-apply, so I called back and tried to explain the situation to the girl who dealt with me. Although very nice - I know she was just reading from a script, was simply repeating the process I'd just done online.
So, does anyone know the best way for me to deal with an application?? Maybe if I could deal face to face with someone? Or ask to speak to someone more senior on the phone?

When you got/get sent the rejection letter you should be given details of how to write and appeal against the verdict. this should give you the opportunity to explain the circumstances, and you are more likely to have an underwriter looking at your information rather than a computer.
be warned against multiple applications, these can severely damage your chances of getting a card in the short term.0 -
Hi there,
I haven't got a rejection letter - was just told over the phone, so maybe one will come.
I think I've only applied once. When I spoke the second time over the phone the girl said I'd be getting an e-mail I have to send back to agree to terms and conditions, then the second one will go forward.
Maybe I should ignore the e-mail and wait for a letter to come through??0 -
Hopefully one should. If not phone up and ask about the appeals procedure.0

Surely it shouldn't make any difference? Half of my cards are in my full name (Alexander) and the other half are in my shortened name (Alex) and i've never had any problems. I've applied for my reports from Equifax and Experian to see what they say.
I always thought it went through the address anyway? Surely if the address is the same and date of birth the same then it will know that you are the same person?0
