At least the free wine from Tesco is starting to calm my nerves a little... honestly feels like I'm asking for a massive favour from them - had insurance for 14 years and haven't claimed once but it all feels wrong!

This is exactly why you have insurance incase something goes wrong :) Let them sort it all out for you :)

Just to add, I work for one of the underwriters on BISL's panel (post office insurance go through budget insurance/BISL) - not aviva, but we would cover this on the policies we underwrite through them.

What it means is that we wouldn't cover damage caused directly by renovation - as above, if you were to use varnish which then damaged the bannister, we would exclude that. In this case, the damage hasn't been caused by restoration, it has been caused by you dropping the varnish. That is something which is covered.
  • Ahhh thank you that's really put my mind to rest - woke up this morning at 3am and had to go look at the disaster all over again as I couldn't sleep! Hopefully I'll sleep a wee bit better tonight!

Sure you are covered , don t delay putting the claim in ... it should be easy going ... You will need estimates so why not also call up the company who did it for you and they can be sorting that out for you. You may find you need to go to a set company but you can challnege this too if they can t offer you like for like.
