I need to pay for a flight but I don't really want to use my credit card. Is it very risky to use my debit card? I was always under the impression that anything over 100 you should use a credit card as you have protection...

You can split between a debit and credit card if the payee will accept that arrangement - it's the total value that determines whether section 75 applies, not the payment split.
You may find your travel insurance covers scheduled airline failure - not all do though, or it may be an optional extra.0 -
You can only split payment if you do not pay online.0
