I would plant some lavenders..... They will grow to a nice size and also you will be able to smell them and touch them as you go past.. plus the bees will love it..... They just need a quick trim to cut off any straggly bits at the end of the summer.... Although you can get french lavender, the english variety needs less care and is very hardy... If you like fuschias... there are several hardy varieties to be got (just ask in the garden centres or homebase and the like.... and if you plant them early summer, they will be established enough to survive the winter... What about a rosemary bush? Again, very little care, just trim off the flower heads at the end of the summer... I would try and get some spring bulbs planted to come up next year... Lillies would also be nice for colour... and I love irises..... If you would like more colour, you could also plant some summer bedding... If there is a fence, what about a clematis ... There are some lovely ones nowadays...

    I hope this helps

Is your steip of land sunny? shady? What's the soil like? All these will influence what you plant there. If its 20ft long go for variety. What height are you looking for?

B&Q have two packs of summer flowering bulbs for a fiver at the moment.

I bought rudbeckia goldsturm - yellow -daisy like flowers; and stargazer lilies - great big showy pink flowers and heavily perfumed. The lilies grow quite tall so put them at the back of the border.

Plant in groups of three for max impact.

The rudbeckia from B&Q only contain one bulb per pack.

You could also consider some of the bushier herbs, like Rosemary [covered in blue flowers, bees love it], Sage, comes in both green & purple, also flowers and bee lover

Thank you I would never have thought of anything like that, LOL you can tell I'm a novice.
  • much will depend on the sun and light that your border or bed will get - and where you are located (roughly) for flowers and longevity (throughout the season) i prefer dahlias (great for cutting for indoor flowers) the more you cut them the more they flower - and they will last until the very first hard frost (sometimes oct / nov)
saving money by growing my own - much of which gets drunk
    made loads last year
