Payment Being Taken Without Card Holder Auth

  • Hi Redpete,

The card was not used dishonestly in the first place as I pay the bills so as the card holder I gave my auth, this means that I also know that no auth was given to store the card details or use it for continuous card payments.

Did you actually owe them the £150, and perhaps you'd have preferred to pay from a different account?

Or are you saying you didn't owe them anything?

Is there an auto-renewal to the service/goods provided? Perhaps it was e-mailed?

Have you checked any e-mailed T&Cs or receipts for the initial payment made?
  • Hi again Meer,

I totaly understand where you are coming from and do not take it as a negative reply :)

Previous bills, two to be exact, were paid by myself using the card when a bill have been recieved. No bill and taking of funds without auth is wrong. The bank have said they are willing to go ahead with a charge back and I know it would not be represented as they have nothing in writing or saved as a phone conversation saying they can keep my details or do continuous payments. It is simply a large company expecting a little person to roll over and let them win. I am not that kind of person and I also feel that this should be taken further so that no one else has payments taken from their card without their knowing.
  • Hey Yorkshire Boy,

Yes the bill was just under £150 however no bill was sent via post or email and payment was taken from my account, not the named person on the bill, without my auth. If we had a bill I would have called them as previously and paid the bill giving my aith over the phone. But it wasn't and I didn't and that is wrong. I am not saying it was not an outstanding balance, I am saying them taking money willy nilly is wrong, and that no bill has ever been paid late or not paid.

I have scoured their site and looked at previous bills and can see nothing that says previous payment cards can be stored without auth being given.

Good luck then tinypurplewitch ! Personally, i think it's a bit of a waste of time but hey-ho, people like you keep people like me in a job ! If i got this query at work and you kicked up a stink about the charges on your account, i'd offer to refund you 50% of them, as a dispute costs about £30 to action, it would be more cost effective for me to do that ! But thats because i work for a bank with fantastic customer service !
  • Hey Meer,

Yeah the bank has been great and all I am asking the media provider do is refund charges and something else as a sorry, a voucher, a box of chocolates a smegging sorry!! But no nothing. :) Thank you for your posts though.

If the bank are so "great", why haven't they refunded the charges if they agree it was an unauthorised debit?

I'm wondering why you want to continue to do business with a company who operates in such a way?
  • Hey YorkshireBoy :)

The bank have said that they will do a charge back but I have not requested that they refund the charges as they are not the banks fault as I know if your account is over drawn or a payment is paid without funds being available then yes the bank is gonna scould you, that I can handle.

As for the media provider I am in a quandry. I like the package we have with them, and I have looked at moving to another provider but the only one that could match what we have is not available where we are as we do not have cable in this area. So if the current media provider does not sort themselves out then I will go without rather than stay with them. In the past we have had a good service from them so although this is a massive booboo on their part if they say sorry and hand me the olive branch I will take it. I kinda like being able to watch hours of Criminal Minds :)
  • Are you set up for online billing with this media provider? Some offer a discount to recieve all bills online, that would be considered a bill and therefore, if you had (unwittingly or otherwise) signed up for continuous payments, there would be no wrongdoings on their side. I work for a breakdown provider and the amount of calls i used to take every day from people saying "i never authorised you to take this payment" who it turns out did is mind boggling.
  • Hey Brian,

I did type this before but it went !!!!!!. No online payments or continuous or direct debits set up at all for anyone. :)
