Can anyone explain to me the best way to get rid of remnants of programs and such like left on my computer when deleting programs and such.

The best way to avoid that situation is to uninstall programs with Revo Uninstaller (instead of Add/Remove):

If it is a security or antivirus program, then use Appremover preferentially:
www.appremover.com
You can use Appremover ('check for failed uninstall' option) to track down remnants of past security/antivirus software. You can use Ccleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner) to find registry remnants, but I'm not a big fan of registry cleaning.
Otherwise, you just have to go to Program files and see if there are any folders left behind from programs you know that you've already uninstalled. There could be leftovers in your C:\users\You\appdata folders and sometimes in the My Documents folder.0 -
