Wheelchair caster issue - help!

I've recently had to start relying on a wheelchair more and I managed to get hold of a good condition second hand Quickie Slam'r. Everything has been great (total life changer actually) except for an issue with the right caster - the chair keeps veering off to the right.

Has anyone got any tips on how to fix this? I'm relatively handy at fixing things and have a massive load of tools but I really don't know where to start with this.

Thank you. :o

First thing is to check that both casters move freely and the same, if not is it the caster not spinning the same or it not turning the same, if its the spinning then remove the caster and clean, oil it and re-fit, then check it spins correctly, if not it may need new barings, I use rollerblade barings.

If it's not turning than its the caster housing, you can again remove, clean and oil or it may need new barings also.

One thing to note with Quickies (I found out the had way), is they are amarican chair and can use amarican sized baring, bolts etc (impirial) which are different to UK sizes. But a good clean and oil normally fixes the problem.
  • It's only the one caster that has issues (have even swapped them onto the other side to check it wasn't a balance issue with the chair) . I'm going to try your suggestions. Also, thanks for the tip on rollerblade bearings (they're so much cheaper!). Thanks too for the warning on sizes.

If I remember right Quickie bought the rights to this chair and than stopped making them.

Think It was called 'NO LIMITS SLAM'R and everything is fully adjustable, without tools, first saw one in about 1996, they were White or Black with Pink parts....

If it is that chair, it wasn't American so the size shouldn't be an issue but getting parts for it will be. You can buy a new pair of casters, but if it's the casters that aren't turning correctly than it's more likely the caster housing. It's just trial and error, rule out the casters first and than it's the barings in the caster housing (or just over tighten nuts).

  • Cheers, it is indeed that chair so that makes some things easier if not others! Thanks for the link too :)
