Dect Gap Phone compaibility confusion?

I wish to add an extra handset to my dect 1.8ghz gap phone network run by a sharp UX-D50 fax machine. I added a third party pcworld handset at Christmas which took me about an hour but does work fine, no longer sold though.
So I go into asda and see cheap dect gap compatible phones but the
cheap interesting ones say they are "dect 6" 1.9ghz, the USA standard not the EU 1.8ghz standard.
The 1.8 and 1.9 ghz are next to each other, can they work together or have more leeway than they say?
I agree the obvious answer is no but it seems odd that you can buy two Panasonic DECT gap compatible handsets, one 1.8ghz and one 1.9ghz and not have them work together or what is the point of saying things are gap compatible?
(Was taken with a uniden 1060 for £8 or a panasonic KX-TG6511 for £18 but I don't want to spend another hour trying to get them to register on the system if its impossible)
Thanks, and sorry if this is the wrong place, I welcome ideas of
better places to ask the question (I'm not sure that asking the asda
sales assistant would be kind).

GAP is the transmission standard, and has nothingf to do with any universal method of connecting handsets from different manufacturers. Basic connectivity is the watchword, but not additional services like CLI displays, call hand offs and intercoms. At the bert least, use the same manufacturer as your base, as this will provide (usually) this minimum requirement.
Without this, you may end up being disappointed, as lack of connectivity is NOT a valid reason for return if purchased from a shop (under SOGA), only a mail order purchase, where DSR rules apply - but it can be a fruitless search.0
