£40 for gas when i was away for a month lol

How is this possible? I turned the thermostat down to 0 degrees. turned the gas cooker etc I do notice i have a setting timer for when to boil water and gas. Is this the reason why? Anything unused still get charged, but i thought they stopped heating if there's a certain amount of gas stored. How many hours do you guys/girls use to pre heat gas and water just as a reference? thanks.

I think you are a bit confused about how boilers work. What exactly do you mean when you say this:

Gas doesn't get stored in your home. Did you mean to say hot water? If you have a water heater that is on a timer then yes that will have been using gas. Even if you don't use the water, the system still heats it up. The water slowly gets cold again when the timer switches off, then the next time the timer comes on, gas is used to make the water hot again.

No offence but this is the kind of stuff that shouldn't need explaining to anyone.

If you are away for a month surely you switched your CH/hot water off entirely? Howver if you have a frost 'stat on your boiler that would have kicked in if the temp dropped below about 5C.
It would help if you said how your £40 charge is made up. What was your actual kWh consumption during this month?
You'll still incur the standing charges even if you use no gas.
Or is this just an estimated bill?
