It gets charged on a % on outstanding balance in most cases.
As Fruit and Nut case says - find out what you are covered for and decide whether you still need the cover.0 -

How much do you pay each month?
What does your cover currently insure you against?
In a perfect world I'd suggest cancelling the cover and using the money saved to pay off your debt faster. Then when your debts have gone carry on saving the payments until you have a worthwhile contingency fund.
But if you do this and then have a claimable event, don't blame me
