cancelled dd on gym membership

Hello
I joined a gym in December and signed the 12 month contract and dd agreement which is administered by a company called Harlands, so my agreement is with them.
I had not been to the gym for a while and whilst browsing the net one day noticed the gyms website had disappeared. I recalled they had a facebook page and there was an announcement on there that they had to close due to lack of members. I received no other confirmation. My next months dd was due so decided to cancel it with my bank.
I received a letter from harlands today saying they had been unsuccessful claiming the dd as "instruction has been cancelled". They have advised me they have added a £25.00 administration fee and that I now owe them £49.95 and that further charges will be accrued if I do not pay.
The reason I cancelled was to avoid payments being taken for a service I cannot use, however I am concerned that this Harlands will stay say our contract stands.
Am I protected by the Direct Debit guarantee or anything else?

Do you have a credit agreement with Harlands? Were you paying the gym/ Harlands a month at a time, or did you take out a year's subscription on credit?Gone ... or have I?0

Dont know to be honest. I am not aware that it was a credit agreement I signed, only that I was contracted for 12 months and that the monthly subscription would be taken by DD. I have nothing on my Experian creit file for Hartlands. I have just noticed someon else has posted on the facebook site that they cancelled their dd and recieved a letter form Harlands asking to reinstate but was all sorted after a phone call. will call them monday.0

so has your gym closed down or not?
i remember someone else on here syaing their gym had closed down but they were provided with an alternative
therefore it may be that the contract still standa unless you get back onto them and say you dont want to use another gym
its hard to say without knowing the details.0 -
If the gym has actually closed then they are not providing their part of the contract and you should be able to stop paying.
You have to confirm if the gym has actually closed first - have you been recently?0
