In that situation if you have multiple bills they prob would not give you a payment plan. I would suggest the PP meter before they go to Warrant. Just make sure the repayment amount for the debt is affordable.

Agree with this. In terms of the ppm debt recovery rate they have to set it at a level you can afford so you need to prepare a statement of incoming and outgoings (they will ignore Sky/cable tv, mobile phones etc for outgoings) in readiness. As you appear not to be paying by monthly DD the unit price on a ppm will be no different.

As they are due to fit the meter on Tuesday I would sort out the in/out statement today and phone them on Monday to agree a debt recovery rate and then let them install the pm on Tuesday. You need to bear in mind that you are effectively getting an interest free loan.

    1. Around £500, can't recall exactly
    2. A bit of both, really. my own fault I know. Electricity bills were coming quarterly and they were so big I never had the budget to pay them, so put them off

How can you begin to resolve a debt if you can't be bothered to find out exactly how much you owe?
Since you say that your bill are based on a meter reading 'now and then', you could well owe more or less, as it implies that you haven't been taking your own readings regularly and submitting then, and you current balance may well be based on estimated readings. I suggest you do this now before the meter is changed.

  • I had one put in as I had lived in my flat for about 5 months before they sent me a bill and then I couldn't pay it all at once. It was for about £280.00. They put a prepayment meter in and took the debt off at £10.00 pw (they said that this was the minimum they could set it at, dunno if thats true or not). I actually prefer it. I know how much im using and im safe in the knowledge that I won't be landed with a quarterly bill I can't pay.

Also, if you run out of credit in the meter, between something like 8pm and 8am, it won't cut off your electricity to give you time to get to the shop in the morning. (At least thats what I was told, I have never had an issue with this as mine is always topped up)
