Barge Boards/Facias

Hello their! Looked on google for help but not having much look! Baisically bought a house a year ago and on the gable end their is no barge board. Their is render right up to the slated roof. The render seems to be coming away from the brick as though water is coming from the roof down between the brick and render. So my question is, do you think I should have a barge board? To be honest I dont actually even know what its purpose is or how to put one on and if it is that simple ( im pretty handy with diy though!) Can someone please explain to me if you think I need one, the purpose of one, and how you would fix one to the wall.
Also, I have wooden facia boards, will it be as easy as removing the wooden one, and just replacing it with a plastic one? Thanks for your time, its much appreciated!

Barge boards are the same as fascia boards but on the angle of your gable - its just a name which defines what they are. If there are no timbers extending out of the wall to which to fix a barge board then the house wasn't designed for them. Bet the gable end hasn't got soffits either.

As far as your fascia boards are concerned yes you can replace with UPBV but do the soffits at the same time. Make sure your rafter feet are in good nick whilst you are at it. Also check the sarking felt at the roofline - this frequenetly needs replacing as well.

thanks mate. So it their are no timbers extending out then I dont need anything their. Could you recommend anything to put at the top to stop the rain getting behind the render? Would it be a case of adding more slate to the edge so it hangs over the render alot more? I have a flat roof at the back of the house on an extension, I dont want to disturb the felt roof so would it be possible to trea the wooden fascia then just stick some UPBV over the top for the 'look'? thanks!

Funny how B, V and C being so close together on the keyboard can turn a perfectly sensible and recognisable phrase into absolute gobbledegook. I meant UPVC of course.

Sounds like the render may just need repairing. It may have nothing whatsoever to do with water ingress.

Think I'd like to see a pic of the last bit TBH - if thats possible.
