Ford engineers are working on a solution for their older models so people can swap easily

"The first maker to fit DAB digital radio as standard on every car it sells will be… Ford. The news comes as the firm revealed engineers are working on an upgrade, allowing existing owners with AM/FM head units to swap to DAB.

How do the DVB systems work? I'd have thought that the signal on those would be much more patchy than DAB, as the signal isn't designed for mobile systems at all.

I don't really want to wait for Ford -- and I have a strong suspicion that their solution will be some sort of Pure variant at an inflated price in any case. I want cheap, lol.

It does appear that JVC are the only company left producing high quality DAB gear (unless you include Philips, spit). Certainly the options aren't really there it would seem. I have seen a few Pure/Clarity/Revo units sell cheaply second-hand on ebay -- I think I will just buy cheap for now, with the DAB splitter, and take things from there.

The ultimate solution really would be an internet-enabled head unit that you could put a 3G card into. All the BBC/commercial stations plus Shoutcast would be quite a compelling option IMO.

:rotfl: "“It’s difficult to be 100 per cent sure, but I believe we will be the first manufacturer to offer DAB as standard across the range,” said Mark Simpson, Ford’s marketing director."

Cue every other manufacturer rushing to get this standardised by late 2011 :D
