The temp sensor is there to prevent damage to the system, trying to cool already cold and moist air is not good for it.

doesnt really matter as there is an anti-icing sensor which either cuts out the compressor or bypasses the evaporator. its mainly just to save fuel and energy.

Every car I have had with air-con, if you are just sitting parked with the engine idling, when you press the AC button, as well as being able to hear a distinct "thump", the engine revs usually change as the compressor comes on.

Obviously, the simple solution is just to wait til the weather is warmer and then see if it gets colder when you switch it on. Then, if it doesn't, go to Kwikfit for the recharge deal where you don't pay if it doesn't make it work, then if it still doesn't work, go to somewhere where they know what they are doing and don't charge the earth.

  • In America you can get a can of gas, and a fitting for your vehicle, and do your own recharge. Anybody seen this in the UK?

Most aircon systems do not switch on below 4 or 5 degrees. Too much of a risk for something to freeze below that temperature.

Always puzzled me why they say use the aircon to dry the damp air in the winter. Only works above 4 or 5 degrees.

    Mondeo's are the same.

Most a/c systems will work down to about 2C. The reason they don't work when it is freezing is to prevent ice from forming and being ingested into the compressor.
