Currys Laptop

Using the internet on my phone - so I apologise if I have missed anything out!
I purchased a laptop from Currys on December 2010 and still have the receipt. The cost was for £299.
Now just after the 12mths is up, the screen is going on and off. I have read the attached link to the Sale of Goods act, just a bit confused in my understanding of it.
It's all down to how long you would expect an item to last for - in this case I would expect a £300 lap top to last more than 15mths.
If take it back to Currys, I did see on the link that they may offer a percentage back refund of the value. Or do they charge for the repair?
This is where I am a little stuck - can they offer you an exchange? Free repair? Percentage back refund? I can see that I have to go back to the retailer as my contract is with them.

There you will see that you can ask for any of those remedies.

Yes December 2009 - my mistake. Sorry.
The laptop was an E Systems Sorrento
Apparantly Currys have said they will charge for parts but not labour - cant see anywhere on the link about charges bar the fact I can refuse to pay or pay under duress - is this correct?0 -
I would first get in contact with Customer Services (0844 561 6263 or customerservices@currys.co.uk). Put in a few things from the consumer rights article about the Sale of Goods act, and they will come back to you with a response (they may also ask for an independent report OR for you to take to a PCW store to diagnose). I have no idea if it will be the case or not, but I have seen a few people with OOW laptops been given vouchers to book in for a £229 laptop repair service.
Also, I know it's not evidence of an inherent fault, but I have seen a few Sorrentos with the problem - our display one did it pretty much out of the box. Something to do with the screen cable.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

And if you don't het a successful outcome from customerservices@currys.co.uk, try escalating to john.browett@dixons.co.uk, who is the Dixons Group/Currys/PC World/Mastercare Chief Executive.0

Many thanks - I will give them a call tomorrow, but if they do offer a repair - it should be free yes? Charging for parts but not labour is incorrcet is'nt it?0

In the eyes of the law, they don't have to offer anything unless you can provide proof that the fault is inherent (i.e. not caused by your usage, or general wear & tear). However, it's quite possible that customer services may not ask you to do this - so have a repair shop in mind to diagnose it, but hold off until you know you definitely have to.
And before someone calls me out on it, yes, that only applies after 6 months from purchase.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Just to keep you guys in the loop......
I phoned the customer services number provided above and they asked if I had extended warranty (I dont!)
I quoted the Sales of Goods act and he gave me another number to ring!
0844 561 1234 (option 3 & 3)
Again this woman asked about extended warranty - I again quoted the Sales of Goods Act - she took my details down and I am waiting a call back!0
