The one thing you can do over there which is much easier than London is visit the Box Offices.
They're open all day, save you wasting holiday time queuing at the TKTS booth, tell you exactly what seats are good/bad and best value.
I have done this for years. In May when I was last in NYC I popped in for 5 minutes and bought tickets for Spamalot ($33 each - two rows back on the balcony - perfect view and fantastic price) and also The Producers for $38 which was similar seats.
I saved tons of money, saw two shows, kept my options open (i.e. I had flexibility in picking which nights I wanted to go) - perfect!
Ill second the producers too we just went to the ticket office the queue at tkts is massive.
Another show to consider is the Harlem gospel choir at BBKings house of blues, its on a sunday afternoon and you get a buffet too. Its a great laugh everyones singin and dancing in that gospel way its a good show.
