Help, Advice needed on home insurance premium

Hi,
I'm hoping someone can give me some advice asap:
Last May I had a leaky tap which caused a large hole in my kitchen ceiling. I contacted my insurers and was asked to provide two quotes. To cut a long story short we didn't proceed with claim: builders did not get back to us and I had a baby so we didn't want work being done around the little one.
Our home insurance was renewed in January 11 and the claim was listed on policy but with £0 payout. I contacted the insurers the beginning of this month to see if we could proceed with the claim, they agreed to reopen it. This week I had a letter requesting we pay an additional £109 premium due to the claim.
I contacted them today as I can't see how they can charge us this increase when they havent even paid out on the claim yet AND they haven't received any quotes yet! They said that they have estimated the work at £700 and as the claim was started before the renewal we would have to pay an increase this year!
Sorry for the long winded thread but I really do not understand how they can ask for this money when they havent even paid out a claim! She siad we might be able to get some of it back if the claim is less!! They will cancel our policy if we do not pay.

Your new premium was set on the assumption that you weren't going to make a claim for the incident which took place during the previous policy year.
Now you have instigated a claim (for this "old" incident), then they are reviewing your current premium to take this into account.
Whatever you decide to do, don't let it get to them cancelling your policy as this will have expensive long term consequences when trying to take out insurance elsewhere.0 -
Thanks Quentin,
Looks like we'll have to pay up on top of the £100 excess0 -
If it's just re-plastering, it might work out the same to get the job done, pay cash, and cancel the claim.0

Yeah was thinking that Mikey72, just wondering whether it would still effect my premium? As it was listed on my renewal even though they didnt payout?0
