What are the must have OS things ?

Have noticed Stardrops and keep forgetting to buy but will get some next week. Which products are must haves ? Also which things I will need for FlyLady challenge, already came across post it note which I don't have.

I have seen cooking things like slow cookers etc listed, which things are a good buy ?

I mainly ask as keep getting asked what I want for Xmas and there is nothing else I really want, on a diet so don't want clothes yet etc, got way too many cosmetics and smellies and trying to reduce the bathroom clutter so thinking mught ask for some OS things or vouchers towards them (so if you know which to buy and where best to buy please let me know also) Only thing I have is my cooker, grilling machine and microwave really.

TIA for any advice.
One day I might be more organised...........

  • I would ask for a decent sized slow cooker and a breadmaker. I have a SC but a good BM is on my wish list!
  • Lol

i have my cooker a microwave and a george foreman grilling machine.

Recently i got a slow cooker though and its awesome. I jsut bung a load of veg in , bit of stock and leave it all day then have nice soup in the evening with some bread

Am debating whether or not to ask for vouchers towards a bread maker or whether i should just try making it by hand - think that could be fun but then agian a bread maker takes all the hassle out of it - plus i have a 2 and a half year old so it might be easier to use a machine.
    Time to find me again
  • A solidly made Kenwood Chef - more versatile than a breadmaker for the space it takes up, and no paddle holes in the loaves.

Give the 2 1/2 year old a bit of the dough to 'knead' - he/she will love making their own mini loaf. It should be edible provided it is kept off the floor, even if it ends up an unconventional shape. Start OS training early ;)

    I would say
A decent sharp knife, possibly the most important thing to have. I have a couple of Victorinox knives and they start at about £4, sharpen well and you can get them anywhere, such as John Lewis
A good pan that can do everything. I use this to make stews in, pasta bakes, fudge, chutney, boil large quantities of pasta, the choice is endless

I am trying to be OS and have bought a breadmaker and must say that I don't use it.
I would second the call for a stick blender though.
  • Hi
I would say a decent set of saucepans, lots of freezeable storage boxes for leftovers ect. A slow cooker, I use mine 2-4 times a week, a large one I find better like the mr 6l as you can chuck a large chicken in when you get up come home and theres your dinner.
I have a breadmaker, which I used to use every day but got out of the habbit, but must get back into. And a easyio yogurt maker, but that has little use too.

Right well I do have my blender, have had that since DS7 was a baby, so theres something I do have. I have some storage boxes, don't think there is much point with any more as my freezer isn't that big. I do have a huge pan somewhere I think, big metal like that, will have a dig around the hall cupboard (dumping ground) see if it is still there.

Slow cooker sounds like a good idea. Just got to find which ones are good and where to get one. I did mention to a friend I wanted one and she gave me a small one she had, but when I plugged it in it gave me an electric shock and started sparking, think it was quite old!

  • I don't know if there is a BAD slow cooker. Mine is really cheap - from Asda or Wilkinsons or some place. They're pretty simple appliances, really. Just get the size that suits your needs.

I agree that a breadmaker is a wonderful thing. If you're not sure you'll use it, try to find one at a boot sale or buy the cheap one at Asda. It will make perfectly good bread, although it won't last as long as a Panasonic. I gather they last a couple of years then die. Anyway, I bought a cheap one because I wasn't sure I'd actually use it. Now, I know I will and I'll hopefully be able to invest in a really nice one that will really last in a couple of years.

I do agree that microfiber cloths are fantastic. Actually, just having lots and lots of cleaning cloths (cotton) makes a huge difference. I only use paper towels for cleaning up germy food messes, and I probably don't even have to do that. If you have a couple dozen rags you can wash, you'll always be OK.

I love having a squeegee in my shower... I wipe down the walls after every shower and it also works to shove the water (along with the short and curlies) out of the tub. So, less cleaning, less chemicals.

Bought my stardrops today so thats sorted. I bought DP some microfibre cloths (on offer in tescos for 40p for 3 ages ago) for cleaning the car ,think there is one he hasn't used so I will steal that back.

I use loads of kitchen roll at the minute, might have to try to reduce that, it's just so easy to throw it away.

Squeegy is another thing I might have in the 'car' bucket, will check tomorrow.

Going to have a look for Slow Cookers while I am out and about :)
