Someone else appearing on my credit file..

hi guys

Someone from my old address with the same first name and date of birth is appearing on my equifax credit report. Its showing really bad defaulted accounts from 5 years ago. Just wondering if this would have an impact on my credit file? i've contacted equifax but haven't heard back from them

Yep - this will be having a major impact on your credit file.
Have you checked if callcredit & experian also have this alias down as you? if so you'll need to raise the same query with all 3.
Equifax will check to see which creditor created the link to the alias and will then either contact them or provide you with their details so you can write to them and dispute that this named person is you and ask them to remove the info.
After this you may have to contact every subsequent creditor to get the accounts removed.
Its likely to be a pain to get them removed and take some time.

Would it be applying for a notice of disassociation? If so both callcredit and experian both said there's no association and the name doesn't appear on my credit report, only with equifax

If you are financially associated with someone then their info does not appear on your file only their name and a notice of association. So this is not a case of that.

I think what they have is that this is an alias of yours - as that is the only way the individual credit accounts data appear on your file. So a notice of disassocation would not be appropriate.

If they think you're the same person as this other guy, they could have supplied your data to him. That would presumably be a criminal offence.

Because of the underhand way they operate, not checking their data with you before they file it, they have a heavy responsibility not to make this sort of misidentification.
