    A terribly sad thread.
Its incredibly hard to let go and say goodbye to a loved pet (I've had to have 2 cats and 1 dog PTS over the years, and even now, thinking about it still upsets me)

I just wanted to write and say that cats do purr when in pain (Google search for more info if needed)
I have witnessed this twice; the first time was when my precious tortie was dying the most horrendous death from slug pellet poisoning (cats are drawn to them, but once ingested, the animals internal organs literally shut down and melt from the inside out-please please if you have to use pellets, always buy the children and pet friendly ones)
My little boy dragged himself indoors soon after eating the pellets, and within minutes he had a stroke, went blind, and had a heart attack. He was howling in agony, but at the vets in my arms he purred in between the crying. My vet said cats will do this when in pain and / or they are close to death.

I hope I haven't upset anyone, but I think it's worth knowing that a cats' purr isn't a sign that all is well.

Yes cats will purr when in pain/distress - a vet feline behaviourist told me that it is similar to us muttering to ourselves and or singing to ourselves, and or talking to ourselves in times of extreme stress... hell i do it!

I think only the owner of the pet can know when it is time, and when the time comes, it isthe best last act of love we can give them...
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Sadly our 14 year old cat was diagnosed with terminal cancer yesterday - it was a bit of a shock as she was only ill for a few days. The vet says there is no chance she can recover and offered to put her to sleep. It was all a bit sudden so she gave her a steroid injection and said to take her home for the weekend and bring her back Monday.

She is obviously very ill, but not unhappy and doesn't seem to be in pain. would it be wrong not to take her back on Monday? We are at such a loss what to do.

    Hi there Cazziebo
When i saw this thead i had to reply straight away,i am so sorry about ur fur babie being told she has terminal cancer hun,i have over the months lost 2 of my babies to terminal cancer one being serve breast cancer which my baby girl had been spayed but she still got it,she sadly lasted 13 weeks with me,i toke her to the vets every week for medication also she had the olucer kind of this cancer, she was still so happy though, eating, drinking and going out and still being playfull sadly may last year 13 weeks after being told she has serve cancer i had to have her pts,on this day she was in the kitchen and she just feel to the floor we think it was an seizza, i knew it was time to have her pts it was the most hardest thing as her mum to do but i didnt want her in any pain,i toke her straight to the vets, the vet said you have cared for her so much and you have shown her so much love, she must be so strong to still be here, because of what had happen that day we both said it was time,so i held her in my arms so i could feel her heartbeat and so i could give her little kisses on her head while she went to sleep ,it was deversating but i didnt want her in any pain :-(.a month or two after that my baby boy spice he would of been 16 on april 16 was dignosed with terminal oral cancer i couldnt believe it,i cant have children so my animals are my babies, again due to age he couldnt have any surgery, again he was well, eating, drinking and still grooming himself, the care plan was to take him to the vets every month for a chem like injection, thay did say it might take it away but that never happen evey visit it got bigger but spice was still living a comfy life eating etc,he was on anti biotics to everyday,he stayed with me for 15 weeks but the same as brandy i knew when the day was here to have my boy pts, having to take him away from his brother who he was cuddle up with was so hard to do but i knew it was time as he was dribble alot due to the cancer being at the back of his thoat,so once again i toke him to the vets and thay said you are such a good owner, u care so much for ur animals and we can see that but hearing those words didnt help me at all,i was about to lose another one of my babies and spice was my baby boy,i held him in my arms, cuddle him so much and just was saying mummy loves u so much and gave him kisses then he went to sleep,i am absoulty deverstated and cant get over any of what has happen,i knew in my heart when the time was right the same as u will know when that time will be,it is one of the hardest decision ever that you have to make but u will know inside what to do,sending you loads of hugs and specail hugs to ur girl xoxo
