At least you could spend the £400!

Have to admit I am not the greatest cat lover (just spent another half hour cleaning umpteen little heeps off our lawn, and we have neither cat nor dog), but the thought of an animal being in pain is not something I like.
What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare

I do love cats, but don't think the £400 is a disaster IMO..

The older they get, the more likely there are to need cost. As I said earlier in the thread, one incident could easily cost £1000 - so even if that happened once in five years, it would cover what you had paid.

If you can't afford to have insurance, you should not have pets.

he didn't say he couldn't afford insurance , he said he chose not to have it which has been the right decision for him as he's only paid out £400 over the last 5 years for 5 cats. Not everyone feels the need to have multiple insurance policies to cover every inch of life. Half the time they don't cover a great deal when you read all the ts and cs and the excess are high. For some people an empty credit card for such occasions is good enough and over the life of a pet usually cheaper than years of unclaimed policies.

When you are viewing the list of threads in a board it's the big blue button near the top of the page that says "New Thread".
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

Does that blanket statement include the many elderly people on very limited income whose dog, cat, goldfish etc. is the only source of company and friendship?

    That's not true at all.

Insurance is not compulsory, and I choose not to take it out. Throughout my life I have always had pets and never once have taken out insurance. That would have been many thousands of pounds in insurance policies had we taken them out, but we've been lucky and have never had a bill over a couple of hundred pounds.

There is always funding available should the worst happen, and I would much rather pay for something out of my own pocket than pay a fortune for something where you are not always guaranteed a payout that would cover the cost anyway!

I have been working hard at clearing two credit card debts, one at £4,000 and the other £500.

Got the first one down to £2000 and the other one to £10, then one of my cats needed emergency dental work. The £10 card is now at £400 again.
I admire you for working on getting your credit card debts down, and understand that you wish to do the best for your cats. I am a cat lover, have two, I insured one of them fifteen years ago because the cat across the road got knocked down and it cost a fortune to get it's leg pinned. I have never had to make a claim for mine.

In future I will take the risk myself and not insure, but will put the same amount aside every month to be spent on treatment if needed.

My friend has thirteen cats, none of which are insured. She is on a low wage, has three jobs to make ends meet, but her cats are the best looked after for miles, every penny she gets goes on them.

So you take your choice as with any insurance, (except car, and it would be madness not to have a buildings insurance for your house), to cover the risk yourself or pay for a policy.

I hope you have got the £400 on an interest free card.
