Vista - updating

My wife runs a laptop with Vista.
She can be working on the computer, either on internet or not, and the application will close and PC will start to shut down and display the "applying update 1 of X - please do not switch off the computer" i.e. the message that is displayed when we normally switch off a computer.
The computer then shuts down and re-starts, but does not go back to the application.
This has recently started to happen and as far as she is aware she hasn't altered any setting. I can't find a way to change a setting to prevent this happening, but I haven't used Vista - I jumped from XP to Win 7.
Any ideas please?

sounds like some updates have been downloaded and are still trying to install...
change windows udate setting to notify you but not to download until you tell it to, then you will know when updates are being downloaded and applied and can adjust the pc's useage accordingly, rather than not knowing and having the situation you have now.
I suspect if you check the update history you may well have lots of failed entries, and the poor pc is trying to catch up with itself, coz they've failed as you didn't know it was updating and have shut down or whatever whilst it was in the middle of doing it:)......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
