Trade in prices.

I'm looking to change my car, the first time in many years for a new one as opposed to 12 -18 months old. I know trading in is not the ideal and not exactly money saving similarly buying brand new.
However, I was offered a trade in price by a dealer on a new car which on checking with Parkers seems reasonable. The same dealer has an ex demonstrator of the model I'm considering which interests me (2300 miles, 6 months old, £5000 less than retail list). The dealer is prepared to offer a higher trade in on this demonstrator (about £500 more than his original offer) than a new car which surprises me as I thought it would be the other way round?
He says it is because my present cars value will fall in the time it takes to supply the new car opposed to the quicker turn round on the ex demonstrator. I find this a bit hard to believe, anyone any ideas?
Sorry for the long posting.

So basically, he is just able to offer more of a discount on the demonstator.

However, that doesn't stop online companies being able to give you a bigger discount off the BRAND new car. There are several threads on this forum about discount websites. From memory, it might be worthwhile checking out https://www.drivethedeal.com and see what price they can do on a new version of the car your after.

This information may even help you get the demonstator cheaper, with a bit of negotiation ...

Post the details: old car (make, model, age, miles, condition, colour and price offered) and new car (make, model, spec, price) and we can get an idea of whether the deal is reasonable.

The dealer could be telling the truth: it depends on what his margin is and that depends on what he is selling.

I'm not a big fan of pre-reg 'deals'.

I often find that by shopping around & finding THE best real selling price, of the car you want NEW, you'll not be making much of a true savingon the used model.

Things like shorter warranty, not quite as good protection if it goes wrong - it's no longer a NEW car, if you're not the first owner!! Is there 12 months tax, or jst the remainder on the screen, now? Was it a demonstrator - or a daily rental/courtesy car?

The dealer will have had whatever makers bonus was available, to gewt the car 'sold', so depending on his targets, it could stand him in at not a lot, or quite a lot of £$£$, so might be why he's keen to shift it.Plus it's there, ready to go, where as yours is in the pipeline & he's no £$£$£ tied up in it.

If you can be flexible on trim/colour etc, on stock models NEW, you'll get even better deal than on ordering. You might well be offered 2006 model year, as opposed to 2007 model year spec on new, at considerably different prices. Even though they were both built 2006, but spec level changed overnite!!

Also http://www.honestjohn.co.uk post the same Q in The Backroom - Discussion, for more comments.

& chack the link on that site (right hand menu) This Weeks Best Deals - genuine real life prices, of lots suppliers bargains!!

    Thanks for all replies.
I opted for a new car after using the link provided by highguyuk. The dealer undercut drivethedeal's OTR price by £300 while still giving me an acceptable trade in and a full tank of fuel.
