Memory upgrade advice for laptop

My OH's laptop is an E machines T6100 running Vista Home Basic and has 1gb memory, about 3 years old.
It struggles at times especially when Windows and Kaspersky are both trying to do their own thing/upgrade, so I've been looking at upgrading the memory. The Crucial memory scanner couldn't recognize the machine but indicated that there were two slots with one slot occupied by 1 gb and that 2 gb was the maximum it could take
After having bought an extra 1 GB and taking off the main panel on the back there's only 1 slot with the existing memory. Further investigation and googling seems to indicate that the possible extra slot is under the keyboard. I've fiddled around with the retaining lugs on the keyboard and removed all the screws on the back but it seems that the keyboard has some sort of central retaining screw(s) that I can't easily get at.
I didn't feel comfortable trying to take it apart any further, so wonder if anyone's got any advice on what I could do. Before anyone suggests it, she won't move to Linux as she likes Vista for it's file and photo management.
I don't know if replacing the 1gb with a 2 gb module would work, or perhaps adding some fast memory via a memory card or USB pen.
I've not run any cleanup programs on the laptop either, but feel that perhaps mistakenly these would only scratch the surface as far as the general performance of the machine.
Sorry for the long post, and thanks in anticipation.

keyboard retaining screws are usually on the bottom, and indicated with a K or a keyboard graphic

would probably run better without kaspersky and defender, and replaced with avast 6 free!!

No, nothing on the bottom like that, and I've already tried taking all the screws out from the bottom.
Do you think using Avast would make that much difference?
Edit: Just had a look at that thread - seem to have missed that one. Will do as suggested, looks very good advice thank you.0 -
in combination with the other suggestions in the link, yes. Or you could backup and reinstall windows if you have the means, (factory restore partition, or disc)
where appears to be the point the keyboard is holding, in the middle, does it lift at all?
retaining lugs may have to be pushed in!!
