iPad 2 tax deductible?

Hi,

I'm a self-employed tutor who sometimes teaches remotely (over Skype). Do you think I could buy an iPad 2 for this purpose and legitimately claim tax deduction? After all, I already have a PC and webcam...

Any answers (or clever accountancy!) appreciated.

ask your accountant? I am self employed too, if you can reasonably justify it then I would say it could be. Perhaps dont mention the other 2 devices ...

If you're using it for skype, I don't think they have an ipad version yet you have to install the iphone version which means small iphone size picture. If you're using facetime I'd wait for the bugs to be ironed out, there seems to be problems with it.

I dont think that bit matters too much when it comes to being tax deductible

Purchasing for this purpose the ipad 2 would probably be considered a piece of business equipment rather than a direct expense, therefore it would be subject to a capital allowance and not 100% offsettable against tax in one tax year. In addition you can also only claim a percentage value relating to how much it is used for business purposes.

Ask yourself the following question: Will it be used in the course of my business? If the answer is yes, the there is no problem. Nobody would question it if it were a smartphone or a laptop, I don't really see how an iPad is any different, even if you only use it to access Email on the move, it's a genuine business tool.
