Is diesel more economical any more?

I'd never have a modern diesel unless someone else was paying the bill and it was mandatory.
DMFs, DPFs, stupid additive systems (that Peugeot/Citroen thing, and AdBlue soon), etc etc etc0 -
Something to look into -- according to Honest John (and I would believe what he says, although I don't know the veracity of this one for sure) the Kia Cee'd doesn't have a DPF (and won't have until EU5 becomes mandatory) and also he's never heard of a DMF failure on these cars either.
If I'd known this last year I may have been tempted to buy that £5000 diesel Cee'd instead of the petrol Focus I ended up with.
I still think the worm is turning though -- petrol cars, and larger ones in particular, have been demonised long enough.0
