Just a thought - with reference to reporting the claim and then paying the insurer back for the damage - your insurance premium is still likely to go up next year, as you will be seen as a higher risk than someone who has not been involved in an accident.

    Why?

Because insurance companies are b*st*rds! (I used to work for one)

Not everywhere will do this. The insurers im aware of would simply close the claim as non fault therefore neither affecting your NCD or applying any claims loading.
Ive worked for several insurers and in the main found them reasonable under most circumstances.
  • You weren't thinking by the sound of it.

If the owner of the other car wasn't there, and you were me, you'd have driven off and nobody would have known any different.
At that speed the chance of any damage is minimal, especially not anything expensive unless it was a glass car you hit.
Personally i'd just ignore it, as he's not been to the garage yet then it obviously hasn't affected it's driving.

If it comes back with the 'back plates' damaged then it sounds supicious unless he means the rear number plate. If his Dad guessed the problem i'd speak to a garage and find out what exactly it is and how they'd get damaged and if your bump could have caused it.
then i'd go round and batter the old fool for trying to rob me.
