When we rented we had a budgie that flew free in the living room. Although the house was 'no pets' the LL agreed to the budgie. Budgies aren't terribly destructive, though.

  • Lol my budgies are!! They spent a lot of the day flying free, but they have to be watched or they have the wallpaper off the walls and chunks out of anything wooden! I would agree that birds are more cleanly and smell less than other pets tho.

Can I borrow them for a couple of days? Labourers charge £70 per day to strip wallpaper.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!

Is it fair to keep birds trapped in your home just for your own pleasure?

I realise some people may find bird keeping as cruel, however like the breeding of dogs or any other domesticated animal some bird species have been bred to be more "human-friendly" and if released into the wild they could die.

3 of the birds I have are rescues, and the other 2 were given to me by people who could not care for them. The 2 cockatiels I have were about to be terminated by a breeder as they did not fit to his standards.

The domestication of any animal can be seen cruel, no matter what animal it is. But these birds cannot be released into the wild as they just would not survive. There are some wild flocks of parakeets around the UK which have been released, however they are not native to this country and probably have a detrimental effect to our native bird habitats and foodchains.

Whether you like it or not, I have these birds and I do agree it is sad they cannot be free. I personally have not contributed to the over breeding and over population of domestic birds in this country. The amount of unwanted parrots, parakeets and other small birds is extremely high right now and is only probably going to get worse as some are very easy to breed and can breed uncontrollably.

I do have to say that birds make fantastic pets though, they have great personalities and give a lot of love. And I would not give mine up for the world.
  • Some might rather die free then live caged but I'll leave it there now.
