Belt and braces to change the water pump at the same time.

As already said, most certainly change the waterpump.

Even more so when you consider the chance of a waterpump giving up the ghost after a long hard life.

Weren't VAG waterpumps one of those that had issues with the plastic impellors breaking up and causing overheating.

The Mk4's had issues 10 years ago, but I've not known a VAG pump fail since then. They still make them with plastic impellors, so that if there is any issue it doesnt jam the pump and cause the belt to jump or similar. We change 10-15 cambelt kits a week, and never do the pumps. Not had an issue in the 6 years I've been at VW, so it's really up to whether the OP wants to. You don't need to.
