in 89 i ran up my credit cards to the hilt to save my business, but it folded ,i evenuattly paid everyone off (7 c/c) but had default notices on the accounts.i beleive i had paid off barclaycard and they said no .i asked from them for proof that i ahd not paid and they never sent anything to me .so they put a default notice on the account .i didnt bother i was paying off the other six off.which were paid off so from 1990 to 1996 they defaults all came off including the barclaycard one .its now 2006 and i just got a nasty shock that athe debt has been passed onto another company who now want to chase this debt
where do i stand ?

Providing you don't acknowledge the debt, it should be statute barred as it is over six years old.0

If you have not made any written acknowledgement, or offer to pay, within the last 6 years, then this 'debt' will most likely fall under the 'statute barred' legislation and will be unenforceable.
Do not reply to the DCA - there is a thread, with a template letter - I will try and find a link.
Who is the DCA? Some DCA's specialise in trying to collect these old 'debts' and will use all sorts of tactics to frighten you into paying.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. The letter you need to send is on post 2 of the following thread:
Follow the advice given by File_Wizard, to the letter and they should leave you alone.
Good luck
