Cashing cheques?

Hi there,

I've done a little hunting around various websites including this one about cashing cheques but the information I've found isn't totally clear.

I have a personal cheque made out to me for a fairly small amount (for something I sold on eBay) and I would like to know if I can cash it?

The issuing bank is Lloyds TSB and I bank with Nationwide. I know that depositing the cheque into my account will take several days to clear so what I would like to know is, can I take the cheque into Lloyds TSB with my ID and get it cashed that way seeing as it has been issued by one of their customers?

It wouldn't be worth using somewhere like Cash Converters as the cheque is so small (£5.50) but it would be great if there was some way I could cash it to help with groceries over the weekend until I get paid - things are more than a little tight until payday:o

Any suggestions or information you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you ever so much for your time! :)

Sarah

unlikely. Cheques crossed "account payee only" are not allowed to be cashed.

    no.

pay it in to your bank and wait. Its not worth going overdrawn by drawing on uncleared funds as the bank charge will wipe out the money

You will have to lodge it through your own bank account, if you had an account with Lloyds TSB sometimes their own cheques go through immediately although you can never always guarantee this eg. insifficient funds, cheque is a large amount, cheque is drawn at a branch not local.

When you pay it in via your own bank although you may be able to access the funds after a few days the cheque is not "cleared" It takes 6 working days for a cheque to clear, best advice is to ask Nationwide about this when you pay it in.

If someone has bought something from you and paid you via cheque then it should be perfectly acceptable for the buyer to have to wait, if they would have wanted the goods sooner then they always had the option to use Paypal.
  • if you have a lloyds tsb account, it is debited immediately from other account (providing there is avaliable funds) and you have the funds instantly

Thanks ever so much for your help, I really appreciate it.:)

I'll just pop it into my Nationwide account tomorrow and take it from there. I figured it was worth a shot in case there was a way around it, but nevermind. Thanks again!

(And ses6jwg, with all due respect - my circumstances are probably very different to yours as I have a number of health issues that require daily attention and I need a prescription urgently. The contents of my purse won't pay for it so I was enquiring to see if I could cash the cheque, not ridiculous at all. Thank you for such an incredibly warm welcome......;))
