Travel insurance for 79 year old

Posted this in travel but wondering if I get better advice here, hope it is OK

My mother is 79, has a range of health problems, mild diabetes, some heart trouble, her consultant says it is fine for her to travel, is going to Italy for a week. Been trying to get travel insurance for her, the insurers seem to want a fortune to cover her then they exclude all the pre existing conditions which makes me wonder why does she need insurance anyway?

Baggage is covered by home insurance Italy has a reasonable health service and is something should go wrong with her hhealth she won't be covered anyway.

Thoughts please

  • Hi, my mum is a bit younger but goes to the US every year. She has heart trouble, eye probs etc. We got insurance through Age Concern, after her usual insurer racked up the cost, what's weird is that she is still underwritten by the original insurer, but as AC buy in bulk it works out much much cheaper. Hope she has a fun trip.:D

Mark - please let us know how you get one.
I have parents 82 and 83 with a range of problems and would like to investigate insurance.

I personally wouldn't want to travel without the conditions covered, but if you go on a cruise then technically you can't travel uninsured anyway.
I'm sure they would never know, but if you needed a helicopter to ferry you off a cruise ship then that's going to be pricey (sell your home time).
