Recent stay in EuroHostel in Glasgow

I returned to Glasgow on Sunday to find that my parents had went on holiday and hadn't told me (helpful of them) so I decided to check into the Eurohostel in Glasgow for the night as they returned home early monday moring. I was in the room approx 2-3 hours when my sister called and said I could stay with her that night so I checked out about an hour later, and was told that the rate was non refundable, but when I got to the room after checking in, I went for a shower, which leaked badly, there was litterally a puddle on the floor at the shower, the curtain was inside the tray. The windows were dirty and when I tried to open them, 1 wouldn't open, the second one had a lock missing and when pushed open, came straight back, thus closing again. I have contacted the hotel complaining about all this asking for the money to be refunded but have not heard anything back from them. What is everyones thoughts on this?

You took the room for sufficiently long to prevent the hotel from accepting another booking on it, so you should pay.
As for the state of the place, you should have complained at the time and accepted another room if offered or walked out otherwise. But it was not bad enough for you to walk out, so it looks to me like you are using the state of the room as a pretext.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Sounds like you're trying to get out of paying because a better offer came along and are now looking for reasons why you shouldn't have paid.
You didn't complain about the room when you saw it. Dirty windows and a shower curtain inside the tray are not good reasons to try and get a refund. One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0 -
When you stay in a third world country, don't expect standards to be the same.(".)0

2 separate issues -
1) it was grim. It was a hostel, it was cheap, it will be grim. I have stayed in £140 hotels with more than a splash of grim about them. Fact is it was convenient and available, and you chose to use it and the facilities it offered
2) you got another offer after you had committed to the first. Next time either don't commit yourself until the last minute, or plan ahead. Not the hostel's fault, they should not suffer your inability to plan.0
