£250 natwest charges??

Basically some scammer got into my paypal account, ordered £300 pounds worth of items spread over 6 payments, My paypal account was set up to withdraw funds from my bank account and a debit card as back up source, I notified paypal today as I got a letter in from Natwest with charges of £250 of unpaid item charges as I never keep money on my account. Paypal will reverse all items ordered and I have the scammers delivery address, but natwest won't help me with the fees, is there anything I can do other than close my account and get a default as I can't afford £250 of bank and they will only get worse, HELP!!!!

  • Hi, i am definately not an authority on these matters but i would approach Paypal to repay your charges, it is their bank which have allowed the fraudsters unautherised access to your account so i would lay it on thick and demand they pay the bank charges as well. Paypal certainly make enough money from ebay charges and accrued interest etc.
    All the best

I would go back to your bank - point out to them, by refusing to help they are basically assisting Fraud and/or Money Laundering. the latter is punsihible by up to 10 years in Prison

Is it only unauthorised overdraft charges you can claim back, or can I claim back failed direct debit charges, like the £250 i got from a scammer accessing my paypal account
  • I don't know anything about paypal but have you reported this to the police and got a police report?

Police weren't interested, they said the internet is a grey area

I would speak to the police again. There are laws covering hacking/and crimes committed using computers etc in the UK. These are covered under the Computer Misuse Act 1990. There are also laws regarding theft (which has certainly occured in this instance). The internet may still be a bit of a grey area to some people (including some police who don't fully understand it), but there are laws in the UK that the police have the powers, and the responsibility to enforce. There has certainly been a crime committed here. Your first point of contact in this instance should be the police. They would be wrong to just brush you off.
