Sounds like it is being better handled than play.com

To our travel community:
This past weekend we discovered that an unauthorised third party had stolen part of TripAdvisor's member email list. We've confirmed the source of the vulnerability and shut it down. We're taking this incident very seriously and are actively pursuing the matter with law enforcement.
How will this affect you? In many cases, it won't. Only a portion of all member email addresses were taken, and all member passwords remain secure. You may receive some unsolicited emails (spam) as a result of this incident.
The reason we are going directly to you with this news is that we think it's the right thing to do. As a TripAdvisor member, I would want to know. Unfortunately, this sort of data theft is becoming more common across many industries, and we take it extremely seriously.
I'd also like to reassure you that TripAdvisor does not collect members' credit card or financial information, and we never sell or rent our member list.
We will continue to take all appropriate measures to keep your personal information secure at TripAdvisor. I sincerely apologise for this incident and appreciate your membership in our travel community.

Oops just realised I've posted this in completely the wrong forum (was supposed to be praise). As someone affected by the play.com spam the other day, in which they originally denied that anything had been compromised. This was a better way to approach it. I wonder if any other big companies email lists have been compromised too?:kisses2: Got married September 2011:smileyhea

Except, is it really from Tripadvisor? The email address on mine is not @tripadvisor.com, but @e.tripadvisor.com. I'd advise care before clicking on any links. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.
Wth every precious smile you make. And every act of kindness.

Although your advice still stands as you should always be careful clicking on any links anyway incase the original email had a spoofed header. Look to see where the link points to before clicking any link in an email.0 -
Good to see a more honest company.
iTunes never offered any apology when they allowed my wife's credit card details to be stolen from their server, along with thousands of others within weeks or her joining.0 -

I use BT's disposable email addresses and this email was sent to the email address that I use for Tripadvisor, so it looks genuine.
But as the man says, watch out for links in email.

I received this email as well and it is genuine, from TA:
nslookup 66.231.81.8
Canonical name: mta2.e.tripadvisor.com
Addresses:
66.231.81.8
Domain Keys are also valid
Good to see a company be more proactive and open with with what has happened.0 -
That could just mean yours was one of the email addresses stolen.
I never got an email from Tripadvisor at all.....
So a spammer steals my email address then the first mail he sends is to advise that my email address could have been stolen? I know I'm paranoid about this sort of thing but ......<checks for excessive spam to tripad email>.. I'm not that paranoid
