anyone know if I myself applied for an MBNA credit card & my wife applied for a HSBC around the same time would this effect applications with us both being registered at the same address or would it be taken as individual credit rating.

If you have any joint accounts then you may well be financially associated.
This will come under the "financial associates" section of your credit report where mortgage lenders or other creditors can record an assocaition.
It's possible for the other person to be searched as a result (I have a feeling this shows as an associate search but I can't check right now).
In general applying together won't have an effect but it one of you had a terrible credit report then it could affect the other person as you are associated.
Appealing can work because you go to a human and avoid the "computer says no" problem.0
