would you switch to wood burning fire?
Far as i can see, this energy increase is not going to stop, soon i think it will come to a point where the weather is so cold for many months that the prices electric/gas companies are charging to cook, keep warm, etc
will not be possible for many people. Seriously, it is at this stage now for some, including myself.
I am wondering who would actually go ahead and install a wood burning fire to heat the radiators up and keep warm? Instead of limiting your heat to 1 hour a day, fire for maybe a hour too, rather than sit there and go freezing cold?
I am already considering a wood burner fire/central heating and wondering what it would cost to install in a 1 bedroom flat? If anyone knows the cost or if you can get help with it, please let me know, thanks.

Of course, once everyone installs wood-burning heating systems there (probably) won't be enough (sustainable) wood around to fuel them all and prices will go up and up!0

There is plenty wood and it is sustainable, you can always collect your own wood too. But if you would prefer to pay massive gas and electric prices instead, i guess that is your own choice, for me there is no "choice" anymore its come to find another fuel or go cold a lot.Owed out = lots. :cool:0 -
Some people think it grows on trees. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

I have a wood burner / coal that was already in when I bought the house.
A neighbour took out his gas bolier & put one in last year. Cost about £1200 (fitted himself), burns coal as well & reckons it's already paid for itself.
If you don't have a big prioperty / want to heat the water, lots of radiators you may find a room heater type (eg as sold in Machine Mart for less than half the above) might suffice for your needs.
You may be able to collect wood off cuts from joiners / builders, perhaps old furniture from charity stores, find it on ebay etc0 -

Thanks mate, i would chop a few trees down or go collect the old trees on the floor of the woods if i got desperate, coal i doubt i would use, i am also wondering if i could get council help sine its a council flat i live in, could be worth a try.Owed out = lots. :cool:0 -

Would be illegal just to go out and chop down tree or tree's. You live in a flat, where do you propose to season/store wood?
I use a multi fuel burner, which gives out heat only, I did consider a burner that would give me hot water too, however, this would have been a difficult task, also an extra expense, so much so, I knocked the hot water aspect into touch.
If your flat is well insulated, I fail to see how it is too expensive to heat, if not up to scratch, chase up the landlord!!!

I would store the wood in the coal shed, its pretty big! The previous tenant used anthracite coals and when i moved in it was disgustingly dirty like you would not believe, but before i moved in the council have taken out his coal fire and installed a electric convector fire it racks up electric usage massively, i could heat my main room and my water and all my radiators from just 1 log per day.
I didn't know it was illegal to chop down a tree, maybe i could just pull off some nice branches then and collect deadwood from the ground, there is tons of it here.Owed out = lots. :cool:0 -

Carry on taking down a few tree's, do this before next winter, get banged up for a few month, no worries with heating bills, we'll pay it0 -
