I suggest that you get an electrician in as a priority to investigate the source of the excessive usage. SP have done all they can by establishing that the meter is not at fault, so the responsibiity is yours.

responsability is yours and as above get the wires checked, however scottish power need to look at the ERA codes of practise and be fair taking into account your ability to payand allow at least 24 months for that amount . Although no one can dicate how much they have to accept.
  • I agree - your provider should have a system in place to check for such dramatic increases. Had a bad experience with Scottish Power myself....wouldn't recommend them.
  • Yeah, giving him 24 months to pay means he'll be tied ti them for another 2 years...........

Are you serious? You think energy companies should be employing people to watch over all of us, phoning us up when we've left the iron on?

If they could do that the energy companies would have to do regularly monitoring of our meters currently I think its only annually maybe longer that they read meters if they want too. Even assuming they do it more regularly they would still be a gap of 3 months for quarterly billing cycle by that time you could use a lot of energy

It just isnt feasible for them to do this unless they used smart metering

At the expense of whom? If every customer took their own monthly meter readings problems like this could be identified early before they became a huge burden such as in the OP's case.

Scottish Power email me quarterly for a meter reading you can check your previous readings anytime online, I also keep my own record of all of them specifically so I can compare readings for any sudden changes in my consumption and average usage.
