Running a cable under the floor?

I'd like to run a cable under the floor from one room to another, about 2 meters apart. I have gaps in my floorboards that I can use to do it in small segments, but how do I get the cable from place to place?

I was thinking about using string first, and then pulling the cable through, but how do I run the string? Magnets maybe? The wood floors are quite thick so I don't think that would work.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

  • I use trunking lid or drain rod. Then tape my wire to it and pull it back.

Use stiff garden wire or even wire coat hangers (see you local charity shop if you haven't any!). If one coat hanger is not long enough you can tape them together. like securityman said tape the flexible wire to the end and pull it through.
  • can you not just get under the floor via a hatch or something? definitely the easiest way with no fiddling about trying to use a draw wire horizontally, draw wires are more suited to vertical cable runs/drops
  • I use a coat hanger if i am only say going through a wall, i have used trunking lid to pull a 6m cable run before (2 lids taped togther).

Or how about a garden cane.
  • right i get you, you ripped up one or two floor boards at each location the cable was needed to run then inserted a mini trunking lid and slid it into position under the floor and pulled it through.

this might work in easy runs but there may be joists in the way, or under that structural dwarf walls under the floor which may not mean a straight point to point run if going from room to room.

    Thanks everyone!

I was thinking of using wire coat hangers (which I don't seem to have :) ), but what is trunking lid?

I'm renting and there's no way for me to get under the floor

The cat is the better option as they don't like to chew through cables :D

What kind of cable are you trying to run (what for)? There maybe alternatives!

ex-girlfriends uncle did it with a jack russell. no food involved. what you do is tie the cable to the collar, put the dog under the floor at point a. Put the floor board back down so the only light it can see is at the other end and it heads for it..
Bobs yer uncle and errr, jack's yer russell
